1. Horrific, but how good that they finally caught up with him...

Seeing that he was a trucker, I can't help but remember the presumption decades ago, that should you get stranded on the highway, a trucker stopping to help you was just about the best thing to happen. They had such a reputation for being (not only) cautious drivers, but really good samaritans in terms of helping out other drivers.

Not saying that reputation has been lost, but given how little trust one can reasonably have in strangers nowadays, I'd guess that presumption may no longer be a "given".
