In case McConnell has died, in Kentucky, a special election can only be called when the general election is more than 90 days away.
This would give a (D) the ability to be an incumbent for the general election on Nov. 3rd.
If McConnell dies or his death is announced after Aug 3rd, then no Special Election can occur and McConnell's name would still be on the ballot. The Special Election would occur after the general election.
This is why Gov. Andy Beshear asked for a medical update on McConnell.
If he has died, (R)'s want to delay that annoucement until after Aug 3rd.
