When there is a significant alteration in living arrangements or some other major issue, they decompensate very quickly.

My father had CHF and kidney failure and for no good reason decided without consulting me, to move. He realized, too late, that he chose a building which was not great, and he became at first angry, then despondent. He rallied for a few days remarkably, then exited two days after President Clinton was re-elected. In fact his last words on the Wednesday, according to his nurse were “Who won the election?” When she said that Clinton had he said “Good” and went back into his fugue state.
