One: That's the way Dad was.

Two: My brother converted from Judaism to Sufiism (mystical Islam) and waited until the last minute to tell Dad. Dad's reaction was hypocritical as he was more ethnically Jewish than religious and he only cared that my brother got a Bris and a Bar Mitzvah. My brother met his fiancée at a Sufiism event and they clicked. (BTW, they celebrated their 25th anniversary last year, still happy.) By contrast, our sister married another Jew and Dad roundly ignored her at the ceremony and reception. He just didn't care.
