Yesterday

So much has been made of the fact that the bulk of the fighting the Confederacy did during the Civil War was by poor, uneducated dirt farmers. The "Lost Cause" bullshitters always say they were fighting for states rights, not slavery. And it's, well, bullshit. Poor non-enslavers wanted slavery as much as the wealthy plantation owners. Only in their case, it wasn't wealth, but some kind of greasy, odious self-respect they were looking for. "At least I'm not a slave"; that kind of thing.
