33. My Italian teacher in the 60s was from Messina. He had a wonderful story about when the GI's came through.

When he was a little boy on the streets while the Allied forces came through (after a devastating bombing), he remembered some soldiers tossing wrapped candies to the kids.

Years later, when arriving in Lawrence, Kansas to teach Italian, he decided to go to a local drugstore, sat at the soda counter, and decided to try something he had never heard of before. When he took his first sip of root beer, the memories from that encounter 20-25 years ago came flooding through his mind. He could even remember the smells and the faces of the men in the jeep.
