Unfortunately Hungary suffered under Soviet rule for another 33 years. But it was the first country to rise up against Soviet tyranny. The "Ruszkis" were brutal in 1956 - over 3,000 were killed, many crushed under Soviet tanks. The rebels waited in vain for help to arrive from "Amerika". The PM Imre Nagy was hanged, his name forbidden to be even spoken under threat of imprisonment or worse for over 30 years. I lived under that regime as a child. In memory of that and for the reasons others here share, this is a joyful day!

I think Péter Magyar tapped into that latent but historically powerful anti-Russian sentiment and it helped him win.
