Reasons for previous widespread and global wars:

1. Ambition to gain resources in another country.

2. Fake and failed negotiations, broken diplomacy, resorting to force as the only bully option left.

3. Superiority and dominance, real or imagined, of one country over another challenged and responded to.
"Our way or the highway" thinking.

4. Religious, cultural, political differences between countries. 'Our way is the only way' thinking.

5. Countries 'opting in' on the conflict, whatever their reasoning.

So the swamp water is not just rising in the US, it is getting global.
