I suspect several senior officers and perhaps senior civilian leadership also told SECDEF Hogsbreath that this had to stop and stop now. Hogsbreath was completely cowed by this, told Trump, Trump did not know WTF to do, he saw the chance to look like a peacmaker, and he took it.

I'm counting on the NYT to tap their sources in the Pentagon and report this within a few days.
