John McCain used to be his shark, and when McCain died he didn't have a strong, powerful alpha male to latch onto. This isn't because he's gay (which he probably is but nobody really cares any more) but because he's a weak person who can't feel powerful and important on his own. McCain was the war hero, the former POW with a commanding personality. People admired him. Graham was also former military but he was just a JAG, a REMF with no combat experience. He became McCain's wing man in order to bask in his reflected glory. But when McC died Graham had nothing but what he probably considered to be his own nothingburgerness. But Trump has a knack for finding weak people to use, so he quickly invited Graham to a few rounds of golf, made a buddy of him, and the rest is history.
