Early voting in the Virginia special election outpaces 2025 governor's race [View all]
RICHMOND, Va. Voters across Virginia will head to the polls on April 21, 2026, to decide whether to amend the state constitution in a way that could temporarily allow lawmakers to redraw congressional district maps.
The proposal deals with how and when Virginias congressional districts can be changed, which determines how communities are grouped together to elect members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Under the current system, Virginia redraws its congressional districts once every 10 years after the U.S. Census. That process is handled by the Virginia Redistricting Commission, a bipartisan group made up of eight lawmakers and eight citizens with equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats.
Virginias congressional districts were last redrawn in 2021, with the next scheduled redistricting set for 2031.
