2. The two Santas theory: Democrats now want to have both working for them

Santa of government services to serve people has been traditional.
Santa of tax cuts is the other, served up by Republicans-- with Reagan starting the trend.

The idea apparently was developed by Republican strategist Wanniski in the 70's, but promoting tax cuts clearly has helped Republicans.

Democrats having both will get votes, but does raise the problem of deficits and debt. Not sure there is an easy solution to that, but winning elections needs to happen more often and tax policy can be progressive-- for example raise taxes on the rich and cut them on the middle class.
