"Why" escapes me.

I guess it's just the hypnosis of power.

Maybe it's the age-old failure mode of believing your own lies, and refusing to back down from incredibly poor decisions. The old saying goes: "I'd rather be "right" than successful." Startups have this "fail fast and pivot" mentality. Real success has a certain humility to it: "I goofed and need to change course" rather than "My ego is tied up in this decision and I'll never let go of it."
