5. Especially when considering the DOW

It's not a measure of the entire stock market, but only 30 individual stocks. Sometimes, it just takes one or two of them to go up or down to cause it to change. Any individual investor may not hold any of them.

People get worked up over daily swings of a few hundred points when that represents just 1% of the total value.
