I am under the impression that the president isn't exactly "hands on" in determaning any strategy in the war. He reportedly favors watching video clips of bombs blowing things up. Netanyahu knows how to play him, and might let him know as it unfolds, but does not think there is any need to get his approval first. Thus, the president will tell what he believes to be lies, no matter what.
Perhaps the bombing of the Iranian gas field you reference is the perfect example for our consideration. It escalated the violence to a higher level, that poses much greater risks of leading to the use of nukes.
