...but the resistance in the streets looks to be protesting against the theocratic rule.

French media was reporting that former moderate President Hassan Rouhani is conspiring with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard others, like former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, to seize power.

The Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK), a foreign-based militarized resistance group has been making claims of attacking the Ayatollah's compound, and was also responsible for other attacks on the country in the past.

But the street protests are a traditional outbreak of resistance due to a collapsed economy and pushback against a number of high profile political arrests and military crackdowns on dissent.

Nonetheless, it's reasonable to worry about a collapse of the present regime, but it's more likely that the change will be an internal shift with the backing of the military, rather than a complete overthrow by the people in the streets, so, it's likely that the problems will deepen, not improve due to the unrest.

U.S. military action across soverign borders does tend, though, to consolidate even fractious groups together in resistance. That's what makes Trump's blundering and bluster so fraught with folly.
