The 1976-83 dictatorship - which resembled something like Dubya, Trump, and Hitler rolled into one - permanently bankrupted Argentina.

A mountain of foreign debt was taken on, mostly to finance dollarizing and offshoring by the country's elites.

They've all kept their dollars overseas ever since.

The last center-left administration (the hapless Alberto Fernández) had Congress pass a modest, one-time 3% wealth tax - and, despite massive evasion, recouped almost US$3 billion that way.

Elites - and their RW toadies - declared war on him.

Left-wing Congressmen Carlos Heller and Máximo Kirchner celebrate the passage of a one-time, 3% wealth tax in 2020.

The measure earned them the rabid enmity of Argentina's mostly RW elites - which later succeeded in getting the disastrous (and bailout-dependent) Milei regime into office.
