but the gift was similarly motivated - to curry favor with the recipient. Hamsun was a well-known Norwegian writer, well-respected in the 20s, but during the '30s he fell in with the Nazis and gave his literature prize to Goebbels to show his approval. After WWII was over he was charged with treason in Norway for his support of Quisling and the Nazis, but he was not tried due to his advanced age and apparent senility.
