If I were writing this, I would put "purported" in that section. Personally think any such buffer afforded would be a side benefit to the actual goal: Destroying NATO for Putin's benefit. Followed by the rape and pillage of the land and sea for resource extraction to the benefit of his billionaire pals (who would then kick him down money personally).
