5. I think some of them already believe that we do

I think that's part of the idea behind the anger at some redistributive policies. Not necessarily by state, but things like welfare are framed as taking from hard working Americans and giving to minorities. Same with affirmative action or women's rights. And with our k shaped economy.

I'm not agreeing with their perception, but I think it's there. I think there's more of an argument for the k shaped economy as we haven't been great at reducing inequality even though Republicans are clearly worse on inequality, they pay lip service to going back to the good old days when a factory worker could have a solid middle class lifestyle.
