In reply to the discussion: Anyone catch our mentally ill president giving a speech to Republicans just now? [View all]Fiendish Thingy
(22,181 posts)The fraudulent electors had been reported widely on the news in December, and social media was abuzz with plans to storm the Capitol
We didnt know some of the specific plans by the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, etc, and Roger Stone and Bannons logistical assistance, and of course the behind the scenes stuff in the WH that was mostly not implemented, like seizing voting machines.
Our institutions have indeed been stretched to the breaking point, however, with only a couple of exceptions, this administration has not openly defied court orders restraining its conduct. They act with lawless impunity on a daily basis, but once caught, obey court orders.
Im not sure why this is the case, but something is keeping them in check once the courts speak.
As the midterms approach, I think you will find fewer and fewer true MAGA loyalists in congress willing to back Trump on his worst actions. Something like 55 incumbents arent running for re-election. They dont GAF about their political futures, they are focused on lucrative jobs outside of congress, and so may act for self preservation, not cultish loyalty.
The Republican Party doesnt want elections cancelled, because that would erase congress, since all terms expire at the end of 2026.
Its simply not going to happen.
Plenty of other chicanery to be vigilant for, but not cancellation of the midterms.
