I wrote my OP from memory of this established fact:

Hawaii has had the lowest overall gun death rate in the U.S. in several specific years, including 2014, 2017, and 2020. It consistently ranks among the top five states with the lowest gun death rates annually. While Hawaii often has one of the lowest total rates, it is sometimes surpassed for the absolute lowest spot by states like Massachusetts or Rhode Island, depending on the specific year and data analysis
