I suspect it's because of an awareness among them about the combined effects of upcoming catastrophic climate change and the fact that fossil fuels are beginning to get expensive (both money-wise and EROEI-wise) to extract (due to permanent depletion). Thus perhaps they operate under the assumption in not that long, the earth's carrying capacity will be drastically reduced. And I mean like, halved, in span of possibly as short as 20 years. And that this point may be a lot closer than anyone wants to think about, or is willing to admit.

In any event, they certainly seem to be very blasé about the idea of letting Americans die off
