Chesapeake hospital indicted after allegedly conspiring with disgraced OBGYN to conduct unnecessary surgeries for profit [View all]

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A federal grand jury indicted Chesapeake Regional Medical Center (CRMC) on Wednesday with charges of healthcare fraud and conspiracy to defraud the government, related to its relationship with jailed OBGYN Javaid Perwaiz.

The new indictment claims CRMC granted privileges to Perwaiz from 1984 until his 2019 arrest, despite being aware of the fact that another hospital had revoked his privileges for performing unnecessary surgeries and that he was convicted of two felonies in 1996. It also claims from 2010 until his arrest, CRMC received $18.5 million in reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid, and various health insurance companies as a result of procedures conducted by Perwaiz at their facility.

Perwaiz's 1996 tax fraud conviction found extensive fraudulent conduct including, among other claims, falsely claiming a Ferrari sports car was an ultrasound machine so he could write it off as a business expense.

In November 2020, Perwaiz was convicted of 52 counts of health care fraud and false statements in health care matters and was sentenced to 59 years in prison. Many of these counts stemmed from unnecessary hysterectomies and sterilizations Perwaiz conducted, often without notifying the patient or without obtaining a consent form.
