What made them groundbreaking was the same way Ford did it, mass production with cost/profit motive.
Ford was incredibly stingy, but, we can thank him for charcoal briquets. The sawdust from the wood of the cars and wheels was burnt, then compressed in the little things we chuck into our grills and enjoy in parks and homes across the nation.
