The Way Forward

No way am I celebrating. I don't think I can watch my favorite movie for the anniversary "1776".
I think it could be complete mayhem. Any ideas?

(1,222 posts)I think a day to overthrow kings and aristocrats is a natural fit. Why let them define it? Why obey in advance?

(101,813 posts)We should do something like honor our Veterans in some way .
Speaking about their sacrifice for our Constitution .
it should be something that takes back patriotism from the Fascists
something we can wear maybe .
I'm just throwing out ideas

(697 posts)I had predicted that the likelihood that the republic will be lost by summer.
Dismantling the institutions of the government and spreading vile lies about federal workers coupled with untrue claims that there is rampart corruption and waste in the government agencies will provide them with ammunition to drown the federal government in the bathtub.
The lawsuits are important, but Present Musk will ignore them because there is no enforcement of court orders. I’ve posted my analysis in another post .
The ✔️ check against the Executive is the Legislative branch.
Moses Mike is too busy monitoring his own and his son’s porn consumption. Truly, I wish that I didn’t know that. 🤬

(57,747 posts)Specifically this excerpt from the Declaration:
"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
The actions of Trump and Musk do, in my eyes, evince a design to reduce us under absolute despotism. According to Jefferson, it is our right and our duty to throw off such Government. How we exercise that right, how we carry out that duty, that is up to our representatives in Congress and the courts (WE HOPE!!!!). If they fail, it is left to the common folk to say, "enough." In 2006, the first time I heard then-Senator Barack Obama speak in a small setting, he said, referring to Cheney/Bush, "I don't know about you, but I've had enough." So, what about this time? Has he had enough yet? Have we?

(410 posts)Sure, we've got the Felon in charge, but America at large is still the country we were born in. A country of rebels and a country of dissidents. The very fact that we're typing here, relatively freely, and voicing our opinions and choices is a testament to America itself. Even using DU is flying the flag of America's founding principles.
A shithead of a president is not a reason to avoid celebrating our history and heritage.
So, don't put up a Trump flag. Don't wear a MAGA hat. But enjoy the history of the moment and the history of our ancestors, and celebrate and revere all the best America has to offer. Myself, I'm celebrating my Hungarian-Australian wife. I'm celebrating my birthright. I'm celebrating the Constitution and most important, I'm honoring and respecting every man, woman and child that fell getting us here.
They deserve that one day. The other 364, we can panic, stress and freak out about whatever.
But you, and America, deserve that one day.

(10,040 posts)We have a nation divided and a corrupt government which claims it's ending corruption. They will go over the top with fireworks and flag waving, putting on a display of celebration for the end of democracy and Democrats.
We need a new Jefferson to put into words a new declaration. Maybe Obama. And we need to make the rule of law it's centerpiece.
Take America back!!!

(410 posts)Nothing here is new under the sun. And Jefferson was a flaming slave-owning and slave-raping racist. Sure, let's go back to THAT.
Fantastic standards there.

(10,040 posts)None of what you say is true. We are experiencing lawlessness coupled with intimidating anyone who dares speak the truth or not vote for completely unqualified nominees like RFK, Patel, Hegseth and Vought. He's firing every safeguard put in place by acts of Congress with no push back from Congress.
And the SCOTUS has for the first time in our history given over the right to break laws to the president and his band of neo Christo-fascists.

Not sure if it is even worth the time or effort this year.
We usually drive it to every small town parade in the county.
Again, not sure it's worth it or even safe anymore.

(10,040 posts)I don't understand why we aren't making efforts to reach people about how dangerous this is for those who obey the law. It teaches that following the law is a sucker's choice.
We were a nation of laws. Not now.

(10,040 posts)Maybe a "Death Watch" or "Vigil".
"Deathwatch refers to a vigil kept over someone who is dying, as well as a guard set over a condemned person before execution. It can also refer to a type of beetle known for making a ticking sound, which was historically thought to signify death."
