1. I came into this thread to write what Thom Hartmann said --- the darkest day was April 12, 1861 . . .

We're a ways away from eclipsing the tragedy set in motion at Fort Sumter, though it could certainly be overshadowed, should events play out the way some are envisioning and predicting what they wish to see happen in the coming months. January 6 certainly poses an ignoble pressure point for our democracy, but the full story has yet to be realized.

2. And I certainly agree with you, but, as you said, when it comes to TFG we don't yet know the end of the story

And he could do a lot of damage, especially since he's rejected our long-time allies, in the next four years.

4. I think it's important, too, for people to remember the future isn't written yet . . .

and there's just as much evidence which points to Reichwing failure as predicts our democracy's demise.

We need to keep in mind, as we mull the possibility of Trump et al reconstituting the Nazi dreams, that of the four charges levied at Nuremberg, the hardest to prove were the conspiracy charges. And not just because of the complexity of the Nazi regime, or the difficulty of showing clear connections between the myriad defendants. The very nature of human actions and the vagaries of intention and fate are always at play, and as Bobby Burns reminds us, "the best-laid plans o’ mice an’ men gang aft a-gley."

5. And, if you think about it, how many decades did it take to find and prosecute former Nazis?

I can't help wondering, depending on what the next four years bring, how long it will take to bring those who aided and abetted TFG to justice - from what we've heard, they're still rounding them up till this day. Can TFG stop the prosecutions with his threatened "pardons?" And will he actually allow the most violent back on the streets to commit more crimes? And we already know that TFG himself believes he's "above the law."
