Let's talk about Virginia's redistricting loss for Trump.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Virginia's redistricting loss for Trump.
Trump was incredibly worried about the midterm elections even before the economy soured. Gas prices went up. The effects of his one big beautiful for billionaires package was felt and he decided to thrust the US into an elective war for reasons he still can't really explain. Because of that, he pushed Republicans across the country to redistrict and gerrymander so he could choose the voters instead of the voters choosing representatives. So far, it looks like it has massively backfired on Trump.
Not just in the fact that it upset voters and caused a large rift between the state level Republicans and the federal level Republicans, but in the fact that it looks like Texas might have gerrymandered poorly and created a dummymander. Some Republicans rebelled and some Democrats decided to fight fire with fire.
Like California, Virginia took the idea of redistricting to their voters. The referendum went in favor of Democrats who are expected to pick up four more seats. And well, as conservative commentator Erick Erickson put it, just so you get the truth and not the partisan spin here, Republicans came up with the idea of the mid-decade redistricting fight and started in Texas. Then in Virginia, the RNC spent zero dollars to fight. Now, as drawn, the Democrats have an advantage from the redistricting fight.
Democrats won in Virginia. And even if that win is undone in the inevitable legal battles to follow, Trump was handed another devastating loss. Not just has his leadership led to Republicans losing constantly throughout special elections. Not just has his idea spiraled into a mess where Democrats currently have an edge. The poor execution of his little plan has led to even more infighting in a Republican party plagued by divisions as Trump wanders into lame duck status with his eyes closed just like he wandered into war with Iran.
Trump's redistricting war seems to be as well thought out as his trade wars or the war in Iran. So far, all he's managed to accomplish is lose seats and animate the Democratic base during the midterms, which is something even Democrats have a hard time doing. Republicans have a chance to whittle down the Democratic edge through the courts or maybe by redistricting another red state. But the damage Trump did has already happened.
Even if Republicans win in court and get another state to redistrict, they'll probably break even or maybe pick up one or two seats under projections from previous voting patterns. But if there's anything the special elections have taught us, it's that previous voting patterns may not matter much when it comes to a party that stood idly by as Trump stepped on the working class over and over again.
Virginia's governor Abigail Spanberger said, "Virginia voters have spoken and tonight they approved a temporary measure to push back against a president who claims he is entitled to more Republican seats in Congress."
The voters didn't agree with Trump.
Anyway, it's just a thought. You all have a good day.
