THE GILDED LEDGER
The marble halls are polished bright,
To hide the rot within the light.
With practiced smiles and ironed suits,
They sell the branches, roots, and fruits.
A handshake here, a bribe below,
To make their private fortunes grow.
They speak of duty, law, and truth,
And rob the future of our youth.
The hungry wait, the schools decay,
While promises are signed away.
The ink is thick with greed and spite,
That turns the heavy ledger white.
The gavel falls on boughten law,
The greatest scandal no one saw.
For justice holds a broken scale,
When only money can prevail.
And in the silence, darkness creeps,
While integrity lies asleep.
(That just knocks me flat.)
