How Hawkish Democrats, from Schumer to Harris, Paved the Way for War with Iran: Stephen Zunes

The Senate on Wednesday rejected another bid to rein in President Donald Trump’s ability to use further military force against Iran, marking the fifth failed attempt by Democrats to curb Trump’s war powers since the start of the conflict in late February. The resolution was defeated in a vote of 46 to 51, with Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Rand Paul the sole dissenters in each caucus. The administration is facing a deadline of May 1 before it must seek explicit authorization from Congress for military force under the War Powers Act.

While Democrats have opposed Trump’s military actions, they have done so largely on “procedural grounds” without making a forceful moral case against war, says Stephen Zunes, professor of politics and director of Middle Eastern studies at the University of San Francisco. “The climate that the Democrats have helped lay in these 20 years of hawkish statements and resolutions and the like really made Trump’s job easier and has enabled him to, thus far, get away with it,” says Zunes.

6. As for descriptive paragraphs I post what's printed on the YouTube Page, not the entire transcript.

Anyone who doesn’t think that has been a handy talking point for Obama-hating RW Iran hawks over the years is kidding themselves.

This is absolutely true. As a progressive farther left than King or Ghandi, I watched the Democratic party embrace hawkishness after September 11th, joining with Republicans to shove the Constitution-shredding PATRIOT ACT through. When Bush started bombing Iraq, it was dumb as shit as they didn't have anything to do with 9/11, but also - Bill Clinton legitimized use of force against Iraq by starting the bombing campaigns. This in turn provided cover for Trump's campaigns. I know that Dems and Repukes are not the same, but honesty, all of my adult life (40-ish years) has been marked by the Democrats moving right to appease some imaginary centrist Republicans. The party is a LOT more conservative than when I was young, though thankfully that seems to be changing. Meanwhile, the party has spent the same timeframe calling the progressive wing delusional and ignoring every suggestion or prediction we've made - which explains to me how we got here.

Democratic leaders are not gods, and sometimes they fuck up and are in denial of that fuck up. However, if we can't even acknowledge our past we can never hope to change it - and change the whole political culture that caters to the Epstein class and gave rise to Trumpism.

10. If you can't acknowledge this, you end up with a cult, just as the GOP has because they abandoned judgement:

based on merit and substance lest it be unpopular.

That's definitely the seed.
