Cities Under Siege: Inside a Violent Immigration Chase and a Shattered Family - MS NOW
What began as a routine drive to school on a Houston morning, Arnoldo Bazán-Carillo says, turned into terror when he and his father, Arnulfo, were pulled over by unmarked vehicles and masked men who never identified themselves as law enforcement.
According to the family, guns were drawn and doors were yanked, leading them to believe they were being robbed. Arnoldo says his father, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. made a split-second decision to flee, igniting a high-speed chase through city streets that Arnoldo, a 16-year-old U.S. citizen, recorded on his phone.
The Bazáns say federal immigration agents then rammed their car, violently detained both, and choked Arnoldo even after he said he was underage. Arnulfo was deported, Arnoldo was hospitalized with neck and spine injuries, and his phone - containing the video - was seized and later traced to a pawn kiosk.
The Department of Homeland Security, however, has denied the allegations, saying the agents acted lawfully.
