From the Irish, Polish, German, Norwegian etc who came here and fought for the North in the Civil War to the many Mexican and various Eastern European immigrants or children of immigrants who served in more recent history, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan etc. America has benefited from the service of multitudes of immigrant veterans.

I worked with an older Russian guy who came here mid sixties to go to school and partied his way out. He was drafted and sent to Vietnam. The US reserved the right to draft any males over the age of 18 who have been in the US for more than 6 months.

To fight for his new country in WWI. My paternal great grandparents both came to this country from Ireland and their two eldest sons signed up together, my grandfather and his closest brother, to fight in WWI. My grandfather delivered ammunition to the front on horseback while my great uncle fought at the front and was awarded the Silver Star.
