(121,473 posts)I don't particularly agree with clemency for this judge either, but it was part of a mass commutation covering nearly 1,500 people who had been released on home confinement during the Covid pandemic, not a favor to the judge personally; in fact, none of the grantees were considered individually.
Those commutations were extended to people on Covid-related home confinement after federal authorities verified that their offenses were nonviolent and not a sex offense or terrorism related, the official said. They were also all considered a low risk for recidivism, had not engaged in any violent or gang-related activity while in prison and had been on good behavior for at least a year. None of the commutations granted were individual decisions, the official added, and none who met the criteria were excluded.
Maybe some people, like Conahan, should have been excluded, but Democracy Not never misses a chance to crap on Biden without regard to actual facts.

(60,265 posts)then why are you criticizing the criticizing of that clemency?

Also what is your definition of actual democracy?

(121,473 posts)But he wasn't considered as an individual; he was just included in a batch of 1,500 people who met the advisory committee's criteria (they were already on home detention due to covid; crimes weren't violent or drug-related, not likely to re-offend, etc.). But the article seems to be implying that Biden knowingly granted clemency to a particular person who doesn't deserve it, much to the understandable dismay of the judge's victims - but that's not what happened at all. Arguably, blanket pardons and/or clemency aren't such a great idea because some undeserving person could benefit, but that's what this was, like it or not. Did Democracy Not expect Biden to review each of the 1,500 people on the list, or did they just go looking for another excuse to crap on another Democrat?
