I still find it impossible to believe that anyone would vote for a convicted felon who attempted to overthrow the government to lead that government - and he was impeached twice, what does it take??

Well, when you ask what does it take ... all that you mention are seen as resume building, because
When you want to do regime change from democracy to oligarchy, what it takes is a reality tv actor, a proven felon and henchmen with track records.
