What identity are the Valkyries crafting for their inaugural season?

The Golden State Valkyries’ roster on May 16 will be very different from the 11-player group they drafted in expansion. Already, though, the philosophy guiding their roster build is taking shape.

So far, the roster construction appears focused on defense, 3-point shooting and versatility, following a “3-and-D” philosophy inspired by head coach Natalie Nakase’s experience with the Las Vegas Aces. While they may need more size in the post, there are signs the Valkyries could have a good balance in year one by sticking to a set identity.

“We are trying to build a very, very competitive culture,” Nakase said. “We’re gonna play at a fast pace and obviously, we’re gonna shoot some 3s. That’s what we’re gonna do.”

Nakase and general manager Ohemaa Nyanin added six players with career 3-point percentages better than 30%, two top-50 defensive rebounders and two of the top defensive bench players in the league through their limited options in the expansion draft.
