With MeArah ONeal recently achieving a personal milestone in her collegiate basketball journey, Shaquille ONeal is doubling down on his efforts to increase the WNBAs viewership before she eventually joins the league. However, his proposal sparked some debate, and MVP Aja Wilson didnt hold back in addressing it.
What is it gonna do? Honestly, what is it gonna do for us? Wilson questioned, responding to Shaqs suggestion to lower the WNBA rim. That could change all of our shots, she explained, offering a practical reason for rejecting the idea.
Wilson isnt alone in her stance. Even three-time WNBA champion Candace Parker, who is famous for her dunking ability, echoed her sentiment. On November 24, Shaquille ONeal took to Instagram, sharing a photo of himself with Wilson alongside a caption summarizing their disagreement: Shaq proposes lowering the rim in WNBA, but Aja Wilson not having it.
The post quickly garnered attention, and Parker, who worked alongside Shaq in TNT, couldnt resist chiming in. She humorously commented, Goodbye Shaq, making it clear where she stands in the ongoing discussion.

(13,005 posts)plenty of points. plenty of skills on parade. plenty of awesome moves and awesome moments.
And a lean in to to perhaps the least skilled part of the game (the completely overrated DUNK) - adds exactly what .. ?
That and twenty other good reasons - including the social repercussions and blowback of adding yet another (artificial) barrier between the sexes ...
Sorry, Shaq - but that one was just a solid gold stinker. Kinda' like some of those free throws y'all use to ...

(62,518 posts)... than the NBA in terms of the sport itself. I never got the need of separate men's and women's tees in golf. Two or three yards improvement on a 200 yrd fairway is a joke and a comment on the alleged inferior athletic ability of women.
Why doesn't Shaq look to raise men's hoops by a couple of inches in recognition that as players have gotten taller there's just too many easy under the hoop points?

(62,518 posts)... it was nice to see team ball. WNBA and women's college BB is more fun than a bunch of superstars in men's ball any day. I'm not looking for plays, I want to watch the game. NBA games can be reduced to a highlights reel, WNBA is just game and it is entertaining with no theatrics and trick shots.

The LPGA plays most of the year playing 6,400 yard courses (plus or minus 180 yards). Majors are played on 6,600 to 6,800 yard courses.
The PGA plays on courses of 7,200 yards with the same plus minus, with major championships played on course up to 7,600 yards.
We're talking 44 yards per hole, not 2 or 3. 44 yards is a HUGE difference
In addition, there is a sound golf reason for the shorter courses.
The design incorporates things like water & bunkers that make players decide whether they can fly it over the hazard or lay up. If a player can't possibly hit it far enough for the hazard to come into play, they are not playing the course as it was designed.
That's why the vast majority of weekend players shouldn't be playing the back tees. I've moved up because I don't, as a result of age, hit it as far as I used to.
I don't think it denigrates the women's game to play at distances consistent with the distance capability & course design.
I once played in a ProAm with Dina Amacapane. (Her sister, Danielle, was an even better player.)
I was playing tees 30 yards longer & still hitting it by her. But, she she still beat me by 5 strokes, and she spent the day offering tips & advice to the other 2 in our group. She wasn't even locked in, and shot 69. The fact that she was playing the course 480 shorter never made me think anything other than how good she was.
Finally, the game is supposed to be fun. Why would we want to reduce the fun by making the course an insurmountable length?
