I should say, I depise Sandler movies--to the point I cringe and leave the room. A lot of people love him--I get that. I've never been angry before--irritated yes, but what the fuck was he trying to do here?

The films main character, presumably played by Sandler, is Tommy (also called Three Knives), a white man who was given up by his family and raised by Native Americans. He is married to a Native American woman namedwait for itSmoking Fox, and the movie follows the two of them as Tommy battles a group of men called the Left-Eye Gang.
The scenes that caused the Native actors to leave the set appear to happen within the first 15 minutes or so of the film. Extra Loren Anthony, who spoke to Indian Country Today, described a scene involving a character named Beavers Breath as being particularly irritating to the extras:
One thing that really offended a lot of people was that there was a female character called Beavers breath. One character says Hey, Beavers Breath. And the Native woman says, How did you know my name?

However, the majority of the Native American extras remained on set, including actor Bonifacio Gurule, who told KOAT 7 in Albuquerque that those who exited the film should "lighten up." "It's a comedy, not a documentary," Gurule said. Another extra named Carma Harvey said many cultures, not just Native Americans', were being skewered in the Western.

Are women a "culture"? To hear "lighten up", this sounds tiresomely familier. At any rate, good for those actors for not participating. I hope they don't get blacklisted.

(6,115 posts)I keep hearing comparisons to Blazing Saddles, which also crossed the appropriateness line in many ways. Well, actually it was pretty racist in its language and pushed the envelope at stereotypes. However, Blazing Saddles poked at racism itself, not of an ethnic group. Also? It was made decades ago and times do change. Mel Brooks has said he'd never be able to make that movie now. So why is some idiot like Sandler doing it? I'm glad they walked off set.

(15,309 posts)I thought I was the only one that did not like Adam Sandler and his whiney assed voice.
His humor and I use the term lightly is something to be desired. Sophomoric and repugnant. Maybe his defenders should lighten where racism and sexism are concerned. I know it will be hard for him to have to actually think and write funny jokes, but it can be done.
