I know it's always been popular to see how much of this shit one can get away with here, but it seems like during this most recent affront to the social acceptability of the sexual objectification of women, there's been even less effort to be subtle about it.
Did I miss any?
Can you imagine what that pinned thread up top would look like if anyone bothered to update it as often as it was warranted?
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)and for women to call each other these words on a Democratic site ... it just boggles my mind, redqueen.
It doesn't matter if it is The Lounge.
The Lounge is a part of DU
redqueen
(115,173 posts)Well, most of it.
I did see an example where one man got away with pretending to 'discuss' the c-word. So at least with that word, people still have to be subtle.
Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)it has been in my face since the inception of DU3 but, you must be aware (at the time) I was the only regular female 2Aer on the board.
Being a pro 2A woman around here was pretty rare. Plenty of con 2A women.
I took a lot of =abuse=

(10,164 posts)Very few popular forums online are as closely moderated in terms of the use of such language as DU is. Not all are as over-the-top as, say, 4chan, but you still read words like those quite commonly. I think that's produced a degree of desensitization in a lot of people, and that leads to greater use of those terms.
An inevitable downside to the increase in freedom of expression that our ever-increasing immersion in the online world creates? I hope not...but I think only time will tell.

(107,144 posts)I think it gives me perspective on how African Americans must feel having Allen West deign to speak on THEIR behalf. uggh.
Ingratiating themselves with those few who (at their worst) would oppress, deride, ridicule, demean, and defeat them... Unbelievable.
BainsBane
(55,033 posts)"I am a woman and you don't speak for me" or "your little faction doesn't speak for me." I never claimed to speak for anyone but myself, but that's their way of delegiimating feminist views they oppose.
I used to find it more perplexing than I do now. At his point I just accept that some people are that way, but I don't engage them in discussion. They are entitled to their opinions, but they aren't entitled to use me as an outlet for their rage. Some do anyway, but since I have them on ignore, I usually don't see it.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
YOUR COMMENTS
Incredibly rude newbie alert. Personal insults galore.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Tue Feb 18, 2014, 09:47 AM, and voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT ALONE.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I vote leave since I did go back and read the conversation. The post seabeyond replied to very rudely was fine. Seabeyond came in and was rude and got rude back. Also, I don't hide for being a newbie. We've all been there. EVERYONE play nice if you want the rudeness to go away.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: While the poster freely admits to being feral, I think there is a better person deep inside. I hope this isn't how they truly conduct themselves and can use this lesson as a turning point in their life on du and in the outside world. Poster, please find a more productive outlet for your anger. Thanks.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: So, penalize a noob for responding to an insult with an insult? Why is it so many of the alerts I'm called on to judge involve seabeyond?

And then people explain that the reason so many of sea's innocuous posts are hidden is 'because confusion'.

It's so sadly typical that nasty attacks on sea like the one above are left to stand.
This jury system is the bees knees, I tell ya.
Sheldon Cooper
(3,724 posts)I didn't even bother to alert. What would be the point? The owner is so invested in telling himself that things are just A-OK here, in fact it's downright civil, and who are we to contradict that?
redqueen
(115,173 posts)Yeah, it is getting worse.
Sheldon Cooper
(3,724 posts)that he doesn't say that often, and only uses it on women who deserve it. I wonder if he'd make the same argument about the n-word or the f****t-word. Does he only use those words on they who deserve it? I'm thinking not.
sufrommich
(22,871 posts)for using the N word. "Well, you see, there's n....rs and then there's black people",every single racist I've ever seen called on using the N word has used the same goddamned excuse.
Sheldon Cooper
(3,724 posts)redqueen
(115,173 posts)I've even heard lifelong Dems say it... Shit like, 'Not all black people are *, just the ones who (insert idiotic rationalization for bigoted bullshit here)'
There was also a term for fixing something up in a halfass manner which involved using hate speech against black people. And they'd straight up tell you it was ok because they weren't directly using the term to describe a person.
Same old bullshit, different group being targeted.

(55,033 posts)The second time I didn't, only because I don't know if the member is African American. I think he is not, but the name might suggest he is. I actually think the African American members of this site are quite conscious of the fact that some white folks are all too eager to use that word, so I don't think most would use it here. Perhaps I should have alerted. It was in LBN. I think it was in a thread about the Dunn verdict.

redqueen
(115,173 posts)It's about how people on a democratic message board feel free to use sexist insults.
You're welcome for spelling it out for you.
ismnotwasm
(42,486 posts)In a unmoderated site, words almost always are referring to a woman's appearance during heated arguments--those are just the words you can get away with here.
Silencing is a part of objectifying, always.
TDale313
(7,822 posts)Most the terms mentioned are derogatory terms aimed at women being "difficult" or "uppity" It's about telling women to stfu and quit their bitchin'- an attitude unfortunately that far too many seem to have been taking on DU.
And yes, it is objectification to use terms that imply a woman is less valuable if she's not sexually appealing to the person hurling the insult.
RBStevens
(227 posts)and if the words do not describe sexually alluring (physical) it means it's a put down of personality.
Either way, women aren't right.

(33,938 posts)It will be alerted on. I'm pissed to high holy hell at DU today.
So I support you. I agree. And I will not write anything to bring a ruckus or chaos into HOF today.
Wait - one thing I want to write . . . The "I'm so innocent playing stupid" thing - they aren't getting away with it. They will alert on seabeyond - but they won't on me. I make certain of it. I choose my words carefully.
But they aren't ALL getting away with it. And it's my intent to make the life of one DU'er in particular - with his casual mockery of women's and minority issues - so miserable at DU that he just stops logging on. I've got the same bead on him that I did a few of the Zimpig supporters and three of them have not been back since September.

It is very hard for a long term DUer to be PPRd--especially if it is "only" for misogyny ( ) and most are careful not to step over the line in other areas, where the tolerance is far less. I'm sure it is good to have a high tolerance for long term members, but it is difficult to see the lack of uniformity in terms of the issues/infractions. But, it is, after all, Skinner's website.

It is not my fault that they do not like what they are seeing reflected back at them.

I will not apologize for telling the truth.
