(23,194 posts)This story is the stuff of a James Bond movie.
The New York Times has a detailed explanation of the entire operation:

(It might be behind their paywall; sorry.)
There were exceptional successes but the Israelis made a huge mistake. The truck that had the machine gun on it was rigged to self-destruct but the explosives didn't destroy the equipment and the Iranians were able to piece together what happened. This means that the Mossad can't rely on this same technique again since it has been exposed.
It's remarkable that the use of facial recognition technology and the Artificial Intelligence technologies allowed the assassination of the Iranian scientist but spared his wife who was sitting next to him in their car. It's especially remarkable since the operation was run from Israel which is about 1200 miles from the "kill zone."
Remarkable and deeply disturbing.
