where you can see the difference in the topography and how it effects the areas flooded. The airport was very flat and the water coming in was very odd but fast. It is easy to see why people have different reactions. When an area is very steep the water comes in and fills up like a bathtub. Where it is flatter it goes inland several miles. Some waves were over 30 meters high...100'! The water had so much force and energy it had to destroy everything in a particular area. Not only was the weight of the water immense but the speed was super fast. People couldn't out run it. And there was not "just water" it was concrete, metal, wood, boulders, buildings, boats, etc mixed into the mess of crap.
I firmly believe that if this had occurred in 99% of other countries on Earth there would have been thousands more people killed and buildings destroyed. The Japanese citizens were very smart and experienced. They designed and built structures to withstand earthquakes and the citizens were prepared. They knew what to do, where to go and it was practiced over and over and over. Even after 2011 they rebuilt with even more information so that next time even fewer deaths will be seen. We can all learn from their system. It costs money and investments and time but it is well worth it when you see the possible outcomes.
