Sutton won't count on help from Democratic Party
State Sen. Billie Sutton said he's not counting on much support from the state Democratic Party during his run for governor.
"I don't think that's a big focus of ours right now," Sutton said in an interview Wednesday with Argus Leader Media. "Our biggest focus is talking to people, those who would be willing to support us on a one-to-one basis."
Sutton, an investment consultant running as a Democrat, said his campaign will focus on fundraising and meeting voters independently.
Since his campaign kicked off in May, Sutton's videos and announcement materials have shied away from mentioning his party affiliation. Sutton said he would aim to court Democrats on the campaign trail, but would also look to gain favor with Republicans and independents.
Sutton is running against Republicans Lora Hubbel, Marty Jackley, Terry LaFleur and Kristi Noem in the race for governor.
