ACLU, Sec. of State candidates react to election delays

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Friday should be the start of absentee voting for South Dakotans—but that won’t be the case. Auditors say a late petition deadline is the reason for delay.

“The timeline was a problem because the last Tuesday of March, which is the deadline wording for petitions, fell on the 31st of the month,” said Minnehaha Co. Auditor Leah Anderson. “Typically, that might fall 5 or 6 days before the end of the month.”

But an advocacy group points to new election laws and says these problems could have been avoided.

“It’s not just a calendar issue. There could have been a legislative fix to that. And there was an attempt to remedy that, this exact situation, prevent it from happening,” said Samantha Chapman, advocacy manager for ACLU South Dakota.
