South Dakota Democrats remain hopeful as they gather in downtown Sioux Falls for McGovern Day

Sorry that I missed this one, but the event occurred on Friday, April 22.

The South Dakota Democratic Party will celebrate the most famous and successful Democrat in state history this weekend as it hopes to make some new history.

The party holds its annual McGovern Day festivities on Friday at the Holiday Inn in downtown Sioux Falls. Events begin with a VIP reception at 5:30 p.m., although even some not-so-important people will be present as well, since I plan to be there to grab some photos, quotes and maybe a beer. A silent auction also will be underway at that time.

Unlike many past McGovern Days, there is no big-name speaker. Douglas Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, will deliver a video message. Like his spouse, the first woman of color and of Asian descent to rise to the pinnacle of American politics, Emhoff is a pioneer. He is the first Jewish spouse of a president or VP in our history.

But the main reason Democrats gather annually is to remember the days when they had a loud voice in South Dakota and national politics, when George McGovern, Tom Daschle and Tim Johnson were influential people, and Democrats held statewide offices.
