It's kind of empty and lonely right now. I guess it's sort of like SD.

(49,445 posts)I think that left you as the sole Dem in the state!

(2,147 posts)there aren't that many active Dems left and many are discouraged because of the DLC and the fact that we essentially have one party govt here. I am not very active in the Dem party any more because I have little patience left. At the local level, there are some good old-fashioned Dems left but they do not have much power.

(2,147 posts)If you start driving to Wall from the east side of the state, it takes a long time to get there. Watch for the big green dinosaur.

(8,159 posts)You must be coming from the east. Just keep following those wall signs and in about 4-5 hours you will get there.

(20,854 posts)Hubby (existentialist, former username Wicasa) and I are still here (remember, we all met at the DU meetup in Rapid City summer of '05, hubby and I first met there, too)! Very glad to see you still on here.
I know it seems dark right now for Dems in the state, but I truly believe we are starting to rebuild and are going to be on the upswing within a few years. I'm encouraged by Ben Nesselhuf's leadership and I think people are going to really start to get tired of the iron grip of the repubs here. They've been overplaying their hand due to their smug overconfidence and it's going to start pissing people off. And look at the bright side-state Dems really cannot be blamed for anything at this point, since there are hardly any in the legislature or in statewide office, lol!

(2,147 posts)I told Nesselhuf that SDDP needs to talk about ALEC and identify ALEC bills that are submitted to the legislature so that citizens can lobby against them. So far, I don't see that happening. I hope that he will begin to work on rebuilding precincts because that is what we need now. It is how George McGovern built the D party here in the first place. Time to go back to first principles. Register voters and build a real party. I know it is hard for people to believe but we used to have a strong party in this state.

(508 posts)And now I see what you mean. Of course, I moved here from North Dakota so this isn't anything new. What is the state of the party down here right now?

(6 posts)I've been an "avid reader" of DU for years, but have never been brave enough to post. I came to the South Dakota group this morning because I'm spitting mad at our Republican Legislature for not allowing Medicaid expansion to be put on the ballot and I was looking for some discussion on it. You're right. It's empty and lonely here. How can they be so tone deaf, when public polling shows approval for expansion, and the medical community is hopping up and down, begging for it?

Looks like the South Dakota group needs some love! And North Dakota group is even worse!
So, with yesterday in Arizona and today in Texas, maybe it's time to get those that feel pretty disenfranchised involved again.
One can hope for real change. Go Bernie!
