All of my immediate family, except me, work in Academia. It has come before them that there is a proposed change to Title 2 of the Code on Federal Regulations.
These proposed changes are disastrous.
They include among many other odious provisions:
A ban on funding scientists who are not US citizens.
A ban on the use of grants to cover travel to scientific conferences.
A ban on using grant money to subscribe to scientific journals.
Restrictions on collaborations with foreign scientists.
Restrictions on agreements to vendors, consultants and subrecipients.
A ban on charging publication costs to journals to Federal Grants...etc., etc...,etc...
...all to be administered by the incompetent, ignorant, uneducated, racist thugs who think that holding a wrestling match on the White House lawn on our nations 250th anniversary is high culture.
Collectively these rules are connected with §200.202-206, §200.340-342, §200.432, §200.454, §200.461, §200.220, §200.329, §200.331 §200.332, §200.201, §200.320.
This list may not include all of the proposed changes, all of which would be disastrous, to the Code of Federal Regulations.
The former preeminence of American Science, already irreversibly damaged by the denizens of the orange pedophile in the White House, was built on an influx of scientists who came to the United States from overseas. International collaborations are a key to science.
I CANNOT OVER EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF FIGHTING THESE CHANGES.

(42,829 posts)graduate student, even if the Principal Investigator (PI) is an American citizen (at least that's the way I read it). Since most academic research groups are a mix of American, foreign, and immigrants-seeking-citizenship researchers, this would cripple most research.

(498 posts)The only way that PIs can do research with the drastically cut funding they are given is to utilize underpaid Post docs. Most of them come here from other countries. We literally do not have the pipeline of American citizen scientists to do that Post doc work. The original poster is correct. This is the final nail in the coffin of American biomedical research

I'm kind of relieved he's not here to see what is happening to science and academics. Sadly our father, a retired HS science teacher, is watching it all happen.

American science is rapidly collapsing in a free fall.
I have lived to see what I never imagined I would see.

(6,753 posts)I understand those with little education thinking this is alright, but anyone with a high school education who thinks this is a good idea is obviously viciously anti American. The only point of these is to destroy American science. What deeply troubled and ugly people these are.

(498 posts)These morons dont understand any of this. Final nail in the coffin is right. Greatest and brightest minds will go elsewhere. The golden age of science in the United States is over. Its sickening.

This just insane.

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/29/2026-10817/regulation-for-federal-financial-assistance
Note there is a public comment period, which ends soon (7/13/26). Link found near the top of the OMB proposal linked above.
These proposed changes do NOT have to be passed by Congress, but if we can get enough influential congress critters to squawk about it, that could help torpedo the proposal.
The changes are purportedly offered "to reduce waste, fraud and abuse", yada yada yada. Their standard rationale for gutting federal effective, reasonable and purposeful regulations. But, good gawd, the effects of what they are proposing would be devastating, as described in NNadir's post.
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO COMMENT ON THE PROPOSED REGULATIONS!!!
Thank you for posting this alert, NNadir!

NO ONE in the media has mentioned it. They're trying to slip it into place under the radar. The media and Congressional Democrats are helping them by ignoring it.
OUR CONGRESSCRITTERS SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT IT. WHEN YOU CALL THEM, DEMAND THAT THEY BLOW THE WHISTLE ON THIS.
AND THEN, SUBMIT A PUBLIC COMMENT. DETAILS HERE:
YES, I'm yelling because this is IMPORTANT!

It's important that concerned individuals make their feelings known during the public comment period. And, as usual, contacting your members of Congress about your opposition. You can do both from this page:
