This kinda falls into the category of 'keep Christmas Jewish.' For those who missed it, this was a major slur against us in that whoever made it wanted it to look like Jesus was a "Palestinian." It was Abbas who made the kefiyeh the symbol of "Palestine." The historical origin of what is today called a keffiyeh was the Sudra, a traditional scarf used by the Jewish people of Israel, mentioned in the Talmud and Torah.
The keffiyeh-draped cradle, which was displayed in the Paul VI Hall, was one of a series of nativity scenes collectively titled Nativity of Bethlehem 2024, designed by artists Johny Andonia and Faten Nastas Mitwasi, both Palestinians from Bethlehem, according to Vatican News.
At the inauguration of the scene on Saturday, Pope Francis called on believers to remember the brothers and sisters, who, right there [in Bethlehem] and in other parts of the world, are suffering from the tragedy of war.
According to the Crux news outlet, the Vatican did not offer a reason as to why the scene was removed and did not respond when asked whether its removal represented a political statement.

(9,434 posts). . . I will not agree or disagree with that. Not enough info.
But the intent and message is that Jesus was a Palestinian and not a Jew.

(2,615 posts)But Jesus came to save the whole world, Jew and gentile. He identifies with all of his creation, including Palestinians.
Central to the Christmas message is our shared humanity.
So the shawl under the baby is a statement that, these are my people to.

(9,434 posts)... That I won't go down. Suffice to say that the Vatican removed the kefiya.

(54,926 posts)And no, the "shawl" under the baby is not to say "these are my people too" it is used, as it has been MANY times, to DENY the Jewishness of Jesus.
Again, this is the JEWISH GROUP.
