It was oriented toward spirituality more than religion or politics as a basis for rejecting Christian Nationalism. I hope that more churches are addressing this.

(24,759 posts)I looked up more about James Talarico. He is a Dem representative in Texas who originally wanted to be a minister, but switched to politics
I found another video sermon of his that is openly political and that advocates for combining religion with politics. So, even though he is a Dem and his political sermon video is a criticism of Trump, I was disappointed to see him connecting religion and politics.
My own view is that there is a fine line between connecting spiritual or moral views with politics. Spiritual development and growth in religion are connected to moral values. Moral values are part of political choices, but only part. It is still important, IMO, to maintain that fine line between spiritual/moral/religious views and politics. Otherwise, both religion and politics get corrupted by each other.
There are atheists and agnostics who have moral values and political views. Connecting politics with religion leaves them out. It also risks that liberal religious people can become dogmatic on politics, which we accuse the right wing of being.
I still think that the sermon linked in the OP is a good one. But I'm disappointed to see Talarico merging religion and politics in an other sermon. Seems contradictory to the one in the OP.
