Sounds like a rough time. I wonder what his 30s were like.
I can truly relate, though I went through some rough stuff a few times thanks to Pluto and Saturn hitting me at the same time for a few years, they both crossed, went retrograde and crossed, then went direct and crossed my natal Sun all in 19 months. Altered everything about my life path back in my 20s, at least is wasn't a Saturn return too! And then I had the Uranus experience not too long ago which left me in much the same spot as you described for a couple years.
If kev is doing the Saturn return now, woe are the next several years if not the rest of his days. Seems like just desserts somehow.
I can't recall what the aspect was, but my heart nearly stopped when an astrologer friend gave me the "one last rx pass" speech. It was awful.

That's the one thing I didn't have was legal troubles during said time period, although housing was also unstable because I'd just moved out of state & was renting.
