Guess the bottom line is to start early, just to be assured that your passport is renewed on time.
I renewed my passport in early spring (online form, then mailed old passport in) and it took surprisingly about four weeks.

i need to get my act together and get my irish passport, and assume i have to hand in my u.s. one. assume i have to renew it 1st, tho. expired by about a year.

It was a year past expiration, mailed it in with the extra fee for an expedited process and it took about four weeks, I too, was surprised. I just got the old passport back this week, got it all done in the past six weeks.

Just to make sure I'd get it in time. Best $50 spent.

6 months after you are scheduled to leave.
