(5,798 posts)The Chiefs, in a meaningless game, decided to rest their players and protect them from injury going into the playoffs.

(5,745 posts)However, isn't the point of sports to try and do the best you can for every game no matter what? That's what we teach kids anyway. But the millionaires need their rest and need to be coddled, don't they?

(3,015 posts)Every game from here on out is "must win" because the NFL is one and done playoffs.
This is the same as the Sunday afternoon game that MLB teams routinely rest mist of their starters (ever wonder why no hitters are more common now and they occur on day games after night games at higher rates, especially on Sundays ).
This is the result of one and done playoffs...think of it as load management for football, which literally only occurs on the last game of a 17 game season. You don't notice it in 82 NBA games or 162 MLB games.

(397 posts)To lose a key player to injury can obliterate a team's chances. This is high stakes chess, not checkers, and getting out with as few injuries as possible is the goal for all playoff teams.

(5,745 posts)My point is sports itself has been taken over by moneyed interest and that will not change. But I remember a time when I talked my son in Little League into going to a game against the undefeated team when his team hadn't won at all. He went for the "sportsmanship" of it. It was the moral thing to do. Sports is now big business. I understand that. Its just sad for me.

(397 posts)is a business. I try to look at it as their profession, and that's why they get great salaries. I look forward to the playoffs to see the best of the best go at it. There were also some really great games yesterday because the playoffs were still up for grabs for some teams yesterday! Just not KC.

(70,942 posts)...that the players themselves weren't playing their hardest?
Were reserves overmatched by a playoff team that had motivation to win? Sure looks it.
But, the players who were out there didn't lay down. They are reserves for a reason. The starters are better.

(21,203 posts)They were playing their "B" team and on cruise control. No sense in risking injuries to key starters in what was a meaningless game for them.
If they perform like that in two weeks when they meet their divisional round opponent, believe me, there will be non-stop talk about it at that time! But that's highly unlikely.

(11,862 posts)Denver could be one of the teams Kansas City might see in the playoffs. Maybe the Chiefs would prefer to face Denver again in the playoffs than another team?
